39.  Tom Sawyer and the Cybernetics of Marketing

Understanding Your Ministry Audience

Cybernetics is the theoretical study of communication and control processes in biological, mechanical and electronic systems, especially the comparison of these processes in biological and artificial systems. It comes from the Greek word that means “to govern”. A cyberneticist is like a helmsman—someone who directs crew members in a boat. Cybernetics in marketing involves leading others in the decision making process. It starts with one’s view of oneself and includes one’s view of others.  Everyone has wants and needs.  Successful marketers simply provide products or services that meet people’s wants and needs.  If you don’t understand how to discover those wants and needs, you may spend a tremendous amount of energy trying to convince others that they should buy my product or service. Tom Sawyer knew his market. Because he knew the wants and needs of the children around him, he was able to successfully lead them to the point of paying them for a chance to do his chores so he could go fishing! Amazing!

David E. Silvey, Director of Mobilization, English Language Institute/China, San Dimas, Calif.
